Who are
you?
Erica Smith
(ELMO!)
What
church do you attend?
Romaine Park
Christian Centre in Burnie, plus the occasional school-based moonlighting in
Catholic services.
What
are your likes, dislikes, hobbies, school attending?
I have a lot
of likes…most of which being in the general area of music, performing,
writing and working with kids. I love hanging out with my friends and
spending quality time with the people I care about.
I really don’t
like selfishness and bullies…why bother? It takes so many more muscles to
frown than to give smiling a go!
I also don’t
like tomatoes or onions…especially prepping them at work; whoever first
picked up an onion and decided it tasted good is crazy. Any veggie that
makes you cry shouldn’t be legal, let alone edible!
Hobbies…writing, reading, listening to or playing music, spending time with
friends and family, giving massages and babysitting. I also like to play
soccer, softball and rugby, and I’m a sports coach for primary school kids.
2008 will be
my last year at Marist Regional College *sigh*…now I have to somehow turn
into a “scary” year 12 so we don’t break the tradition for the year sevens.
Plans
for the future?
After year 12,
I’m planning on taking a year off to get lots of experience in fields like
child care and working with primary school age children, then it’s off to
UTAS in Launnie to study to become a primary school teacher, or possibly a
nurse. It’s most likely to be teaching though, because teaching little kids
is my biggest God-driven passion.
Why are
you doing the Super Squad course?
I’m really
hoping to grow in leaps and bounds in my journey with Christ, and to gain as
much experience I can in the background works that support ministry work.
Tell me
about the training week you had? What did you like? What was challenging?
Training week
was awesome! I went home for Christmas and missed camp so much that by New
Years, I’d started looking at my watch to see how fast the 2nd of
January could come around.
I think,
however, that it should be called the Challenge Week though, because we were
all thrown out of our comfort zones and challenged on so many different
levels; from doing the log level of the High Ropes course blindfolded, to
chatting to residents at Eliza Purton, Alex and Tamara found so many
imaginative ways to keep us barrelling forwards at top speed.
How are
you feeling about the rest of the summer?
So excited!
And a little anxious…I miss the last week for a school SRC trip to a
conference in New Zealand, so I keep thinking that the summer’s going far
too quickly! I love being here and I know that when the time comes to say
goodbye, there will be lots of tears!
What
are you looking forward to?
I can’t wait
to supervise Junior Girls! I love the program Nikki and I have come up with
and it’s going to be awesome to see a holiday camp from a different
angle.
What
types of things have you done so far in the course?
Lots!
(Unfortunately, that includes a lot of blonde moments too…Nikki and I seem
to be filling the quote board up really quickly…) The most memorable so far
have definitely watching Yowie, Matt and Nikki get baptised, preparing for
my own baptism, chatting with the guys late at night, swimming at the beach
(Yowie: *froggy kick, froggy kick, froggie kick…*) and cleaning with Bruce
on Fridays. I’ve never in my life met a person as friendly and professional
as Bruce, or as willing to serve others as he is.
Which
camp are you supervising and what are you excited about?
I’m
supervising Junior Girls Warrior Princess with Nikki next week. I’m really
exciting about meeting all the campers and seeing them grow in their
understanding of themselves and the talents they’ve been given, and stepping
forwards in their walk with Christ.
Have
you met any staff that you have learnt something from?
All the staff
have taught us a lot, but especially Bruce. He is an amazing example of a
servant heart and his dedication to his job makes him an awesome role model.
What
types of challenges have you done? What was good about them? What was hard?
Ha…haha…ha…someone
needs to take Alex to Blindfolds Anonymous or something. Most of our squad
challenges (bar the nursing home of course) have been done blindfolded!
So far, we’ve
carried our team around on a homemade stretcher, done the team rescue with a
couple of blindfolds, most of the challenge course blindfolded, done the log
of the High Ropes blindfolded (EEEEK!!!!), blindfolded archery, (unblindfolded!)
Judo, and lots and lots of other things. We also accidentally set ourselves
an extra squad challenge at the beach when we personally met the beach’s
resident rip and tow…and somehow come out the other side of all of these
challenges grinning harder than ever before and ready to get out and learn
more.
Tell me
about the squad times and activities? What are they, what do you get out of
them?
The squad
times are times when we all get together to learn about ourselves and who
God is teaching us to be. They’ve been really insightful so far and keep
getting better and better.
The squad
activities are hilarious! Take a look at our photos and you’ll see what I
mean. The best so far has been the charades game we played with Alex and
Tamara…oh man that was a scream!
